Learning to Take Better Care of Your Family's Teeth

What Is a Family Dentist?

You've probably heard the term "family dentist" before, but what exactly does it mean? To put it simply, it's a dental practice that provides services for patients of all ages. They usually specialize in child and teen dental services while still accepting adult patients.

They Serve the Whole Family

Rather than having the children in your family go to a different dentist than the adults, you can all go to a family dentist. You can even book appointments for the same day to save yourself from taking multiple trips. It's particularly convenient if you have to miss work or dismiss your kids from school for appointments to get it all done in one day.

Education

Traditional dentists clean teeth, perform check-ups, and repair any issues they find. A family dentist will also educate children to know how to take care of their oral health at home. Education is vital for children to avoid unnecessary problems with their teeth and gums by staying consistent with their upkeep.

A Welcoming Environment

Many children—and some adults—have an intense fear of the dentist. Family dentists have a more welcoming environment than traditional dentists, making the process less intimidating. Rather than a stuffy office similar to one in a hospital, family dentists will have things like toys, games, fun artwork, etc.

The staff at family dentists are extra friendly and welcoming, as they know that children will be nervous during their visits. After your child finishes their appointment, they will usually get a little bag filled with dental supplies. They may even get to choose a sticker or small toy to bring home for being so brave.

Tools and Equipment for Kids

A traditional dentist may not have the right tools and equipment to treat kids. A family dentist will have everything they need to work on children, including tools designed for their smaller mouths. Anything to make your child more comfortable will help make the entire experience less stressful for them and you.

Pediatricians

If you're lucky, you might find a family dentist who is also a pediatrician. They will understand the nuances of treating children and how to look for common dental issues found in younger patients.

Specialists in One Location

Many family dentists will have on-site or on-call oral health specialists to handle various procedures. For example, they might have an on-site orthodontist since it's so common for kids to need braces. It will make it a lot easier for you to go to one place instead of traveling to a separate office for extra services.
